Location

Ningxia is located in north central China with Inner Mongolia to the north and Gansu to the south.   Ningxia is considered the gateway to western China.  At times in China’s past it was a border region and parts of the Ming Dynasty great wall run through Ningxia.  Zhongwei is west central Ningxia on the banks of the Yellow River.

Climate

Zhongwei has a dessert climate with four distinct seasons.  Winters are cold with average lows dropping to -13C (7F) in January and summers are comfortable with the average high in July of 29.5C (85F) and average low of 18C (64F).  It receives around 3000 hours of sunshine a year which is similar to Salt Lake City, Utah.   The abundant sunshine and large day-night temperature differences make Zhongwei an ideal location for growing fruits and their watermelons are especially revered.
